Extended leave differs from statutory paid time off or sick leave and refers to unpaid long periods away from work. Many employees ask for extended leave for professional development such as a research sabbatical, for medical reasons or for travel to visit family. Many employers facilitate these requests as part of their benefits packages but usually request that you provide notice in advance for these periods and may require supporting documentation.
